Some quick updates and why I am quiet

My mom is visiting us from California. She has been with us just over 2 weeks, so it is a bit harder to keep up with cyber things.

As my my previous post says… we think kidding is over for 2010 and are hoping to sell down a bit more before breeding season starts.

The garden is mostly in… just finishing up the last of the planting & mulching. I need to go out and tie up the tomatoes. We are growing – bush beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, kidney beans, purple hull peas, muskmelon, watermelon, lettuce, onions, carrots, radishes, strawberries, and potatoes.

The new berry patch is in with blueberries, black berries, and raspberries. And our orchard is growing as we found a great deal on some more fruit trees. We bought some more apple, peach, plum, nectarine, and apricot to add to our existing apple, peach, and pear trees.

We moved the older chicks to a new location in the back corner of the garden and they are loving the fresh grass. The older hens are mostly corralled now and do not like it as their egg production shows. Hoping to get our new chicken tractors built soon. We are planning to order another batch of chicks this month.

Ducks are doing great and we have a barred rock hen currently setting on a clutch of duck eggs. Hoping they hatch and we have more baby ducks soon. No guinea or turkey nests that we have seen so far.

Maureen O’ Swine is growing well and her momma Cleopatra is in with Anthony and we are hoping for more piglets in June or July.

The rabbits are starting to breed like rabbits again. We have 4 juveniles getting close to weaning, 2 batches of bunnies less than a week old, and 3 more being bred. One of the momma’s kindled last Sat and gave us 9 babies! A nice mix of white, black, and spotted. Due to an error in ahem gender checking… we now have 4 buck rabbits instead of 3.

The 2 remaining kittens from our last batch “Boots” & “My Kitten” are at that fun and playful stage and we are waiting impatiently for their momma Happy to birth the next batch. Hoping for some males this time. She has given us 5 females so far and no males. Our outdoor cats are down to 2 *Frosty the Snowcat* and *Milo* and we need a couple more to keep up with the mousing.

We are REALLY hoping to soap & candle this week… and impatiently waiting for canning season to begin.

Oops my mom is up now. I’ll try to update again soon.
